Norderney in Winter time – anything but boring

Well, this title has been copied from a tv broadcast, but it is true. And we are not talking about East Frisian nightlife or the carnival opening on November 11th.

But, why are two big groups of Henkel retirees travelling year after year to the island of Norderney in November? It is cold, almost always windy and often rainy.

For one thing people in the north are convinced, that there is no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing. For another thing, both journeys are offered under the slogan “sports week”. Because the programs for both groups are largely identical, this report focuses on the activities of group II.

“Sports week” means aqua aerobics from 7 a.m. in the hotel pool, early-morning exercise from 8.15 a.m. on the beach, and from 11 a.m. onwards there are various open-air activities like guided tours in the village and on the beach to enhance knowledge about culture and history. In addition, “boßeln” in the dog meadows, beach golfing in the valley of rabbit droppings – now more a dog’s dropping valley – or hiking to the “White Dune”.

Everything as usual, but a few things were new. So was the beachside excursion with “Pauli” Rass, who told us almost everything about worms, mussels, snails, crabs and, not to forget, the ravening seagulls. A new event, too, was the tea workshop in the “Old Mill”. East Frisian tea as much as you could drink, but just one piece of butter cake per person, and we learned how to brew the tea and really enjoy it.

What else should be mentioned? During the walk across the dunes it is really recommended to climb up the observation platform, it’s worth it. Furthermore, this time group II was there on November 11th and thus opened the carnival season. And finally, in the last evening, the winners of different competitions were honored, and Susan handed over a certificate to each participant, nicely designed by Bernd.

As a conclusion you could say: Once again, it was a nice, sporty and active week, regarding the weather indeed freezingly cold, but no rain. It didn’t come until we departed, but nobody cared that.
